Chinese online retail giant 360buy spreads worldwide, may keep Amazon on its toes
Many of us who live in North America and Europe consider Amazon synonymous with online retail -- yet we forget that the company barely even registers in some parts of the world. That misconception is about to be cleared up now that one of China's largest online retailers, 360buy, is going global. A just-launched English version of the store is initially shipping China-made goods for free to 36 countries that include obvious candidates like Australia, Canada, the UK and the US as well as France, Germany and southeast Asia. You're unlikely to find a Kindle Fire HD equivalent in the selection, but the mix could still make Amazon nervous when the brand-agnostic can already find real bargains. Combined with long-term plans to set up local distribution points, 360buy's international expansion could get more of us comfortable with buying from China and heat up a retail race that some thought had already been won.

Google draws 25 million new building footprints in Maps, shapes up your neighborhood
The fine, well labeled lines of Google Maps may show a clean layout of your neighborhood, but without buildings, it looks too much like a two-dimensional spread of undeveloped tract housing. Google's finally filling in the gaps, outlining 25 million building footprints in cities all across the United States. Residents of Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Houston, Detroit and other cities can now see the familiar outlines of their local stomping ground on the services' mobile and desktop maps. Most of these buildings were algorithmically generated from aerial photographs, locals can pen in their own content by using Google Map Maker to add new buildings or tag their favorite local eatery. The tweak sounds minor, but it certainly makes the standard map's criss-cross of roads look more familiar. Check out the official Google Lat Long blog below for more details.

Review: Tweeki is a beautiful, mobile-like desktop client for Twitter
Twitter is one of the most popular social networks around, and accordingly, Twitter clients are a dime a dozen. Despite how common these clients are, it's surprisingly hard to find one that works well, is simple and easy to use, and is also nice to look at. Tweeki is trying to be just that: A simple and beautiful Twitter client, with all the basic features needed to manage a Twitter account.
Tweeki is an intriguing combination between Web app and desktop app. It runs on Pokki, a desktop interface and store for web apps. If you don't already have it, it will automatically install when you download Tweeki. Compared to popular clients such as TweetDeck and MetroTwit, Tweeki is no more than a mini-app, and feels almost like something you would install on your mobile device. The interface is nice and clean, and includes everything you could want from a simple Twitter client.
After logging in with a Twitter account, you'll find five tabs you can use to browse your stream: timeline, mentions, direct messages, lists and search. The interface is simply gorgeous. Your timeline is easy to read: Your own tweets appear against a green background and your mentions are marked in orange. This makes it doubly easy to see what's what in your timeline. Tweeki's color scheme cannot be changed, however, and the available one is not colorblind-friendly.
Each tweet includes the usual options to reply, retweet (both old style and new), send a direct messageand add to favorites. Conversation view is also available, helping you keep track of back and forth tweets.
You can use Tweeki's interface to find all the lists you're a member of, and to create and subscribe to new lists. You can also perform Twitter searches from within the app?those can be saved for recurring use?and even explore world trends through hashtags.
Through the settings, you can enable or disable your Tweeki notifications; these come as either "badges" or "banners", and can be activated for timeline, mentions and/or DMs. Badges will simply show the number of new tweets in a tiny badge over Tweeki's tray icon, while banners are actual pop ups, and are much more noticeable. You can play with these options to create your personal notification preferences. Take note that if you enable banners and then choose to shut down Tweeki, you will be bombarded with them when you launch it again.
When it comes to tweeting, things are almost perfect. Writing a tweet is easy enough, as is attaching an image, which is a nice feature.
Trouble starts when trying to attach a link. The program's settings include the option to shorten links automatically, but unfortunately, this doesn't always work. Not only does the automation fail, but they sometimes remain long even after shortening manually by clicking and choosing "Shorten link." Even when a link does take its short form, the character count for the tweet doesn't always update, which is quite confusing. Another sorely missed feature is a spell checker.
Tweeki includes the option to manage more than one Twitter account. You can add more users by clicking the small arrow next to your profile image at the bottom of the window. Once you add several accounts, you can easily switch between them through the same arrow. Switching accounts takes several seconds, and notifications are not labeled in any way to indicate which account they belong to. This turns multiple-account management in Tweeki into quite a confusing experience.
In the first ten minutes I used Tweeki, it lost connection to Twitter for quite a long time, and it wasn't entirely reliable when it came to showing every single tweet. This problem solved itself within approximately 30 minutes. Since it's part of Pokki, there's no visible way to close Tweeki. You can sign out from your Twitter account, but you might have to enter your username and password all over again next time you want to log in.
Tweeki is a simple client with a stunning interface, and as long as you don't need to manage more than one account, it's an excellent free option. Tiny and sweet, it turns keeping up with Twitter into a joyous task, despite the occasional reliability issue, which is present in almost every client. If you need to manage several accounts, and want to spend some money, you might have better luck with MetroTwit. In all other scenarios, give Tweeki a spin.
Note: The "Try it for free" button on the Product Information page takes you to the vendor's site, where you can download the latest version of the software.

Cyber warfare a real threat, the US Secretary of Defense warns
The U.S. is facing a dramatically increasing threat from cyber attacks and a future attack on the country's critical infrastructure could have an effect similar to the September 11 terrorist attacks of 2001, the U.S. Secretary of Defense said last week.
Speaking at a meeting of the Business Executives for National Security (BENS) in New York Thursday night, Leon Panetta called the Internet "the battlefield of the future" and spelled out what he believes the Department of Defense's role should be in cyberspace.
The military's role in securing the domestic Internet and working against attacks on commercial institutions has been controversial, although Panetta sought to get the assembled business leaders on his side by warning them of the danger a large-scale attack could have on their companies.
"A cyber attack perpetrated by nation states or violent extremist groups could be as destructive as the terrorist attack on 9/11," he said in the televised speech. "Such a destructive cyber terrorist attack could virtually paralyze the nation." (See video of Panetta warning against future cyber attacks.)
Denial of service attacks cited
Panetta acknowledged recent distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks on U.S. financial institutions that disrupted their websites and expressed concern with the speed at which they hit, but said he was even more alarmed by a recent attack by malware dubbed "Shamoon" that hit oil company Saudi Aramco.
"Shamoon included a routine called a 'wiper,' coded to self-execute," Panetta said. "This routine replaced crucial system files with an image of a burning U.S. flag. It also put additional 'garbage' data that overwrote all the real data on the machine. More than 30,000 computers it infected were rendered useless, and had to be replaced. It virtually destroyed 30,000 computers."
"All told, the Shamoon virus was probably the most destructive attack the private sector has seen to date," he said. "Imagine the impact an attack like that would have on your company."
Panetta told his audience the Department of Defense knows of specific instances where attackers have gained access to critical infrastructure systems and said such attacks could do great harm.
"An aggressor nation or extremist group could use these kinds of cyber tools to gain control of critical switches," he said. "They could for example derail passenger trains, or even more dangerous trains loaded with lethal chemicals," he said. "They could contaminate the water supply in major cities, or shut down the power grid across large parts of the country. The most destructive scenarios involve cyber actors launching several attacks on our critical infrastructure at one time in combination with a physical attack on our country."
Such a scenario, said Panetta, would "paralyze and shock the nation" and be equivalent to a "cyber Pearl Harbor." (See video of Panetta setting out the scenario.)
The Department of Defense has an interest in stirring up fear of online attacks -- it wants to remain involved in cyber defense.
Over the last few years, the U.S. has developed the world's most sophisticated system to detect and prevent cyber attacks, Panetta said. He then set out why he believes the Department should be involved in national cyber security.
Privacy concerns surface
Panetta first addressed one of the biggest issues surrounding increased military involvement with the Internet: the possibility that the Department of Defense would monitor personal e-mail and communications between U.S. citizens.
"That it not our goal, that is not our job, that is not our mission," he said. "Our mission is to defend the nation. We defend. We defer. And if called upon, we take decisive action to protect our citizens. In the past we have done so through operations on land and at sea, in the sky and in space. In this century, the United States military must help defend the nation in cyberspace as well." (See video of Panetta pledging not to monitor the communications of U.S. citizens.)
To do this, Panetta said the Department of Defense in investing more than US$3 billion per year in developing new capabilities to fight cyber attacks and said the U.S. has the capability to go on the offensive when required.
"If we detect an incoming attack that will cause significant physical destruction in the United States, or kill American citizens, we need to have the option to take action against those who would attack us, to defend this nation when directed by the president" Panetta said. "For these kinds of scenarios, the department has developed the capability to conduct effective operations to counter threats to our national interests in cyberspace."
"Let me be clear, that we will only do so to defend our nation, to defend our interests, to defend our allies. And we will only do so in a manner that is consistent with the policy principles and legal frameworks that the department follows for other domains, including the law of armed conflict," he said. (See video of Panetta's remarks on when the military would get step in to defend the national Internet.)
Revising rules of engagement
As a result of the increased focus on cyber security by several government agencies, Panetta said the Department of Defense is in the final stages of revising its rules of engagement in cyberspace. The change is the largest in seven years and will spell out the duty of the military to defend its networks and also the nation should the U.S. come under major cyber attack.
Panetta closed with a call to his audience to share the responsibility to protect cyberspace.
"Ultimately, no one has a greater interest in cyber security than the business that depend on a safe, secure, and resilient global digital infrastructure," he said. "To defend those networks more effectively, we must share information between the government and private sector."
"We've made real progress in sharing information with the private sector, but very frankly, we need Congress to act to ensure that this sharing is timely and comprehensive. Companies should be able to share specific threat information with the government without the prospect of lawsuits hanging over their head. And a key principle must be to protect the fundamental liberties and privacy in cyberspace that we are all duty bound to uphold."

Nike+ FuelBand, SportWatch GPS add some new colors for the holidays
The good news is that Nike is adding some new colors to its Nike+ connected FuelBand and SportWatch GPS lines so your wristwear can more closely match your kicks all winter. While the original translucent limited edition Nike+ FuelBand Ice won't be returning, at the end of October it will be available in new White Ice and Black Ice colors, with distribution expanded to more Nike stores in the US, Canada and UK. If you prefer GPS, precise timing and a multiplatform Nike+ Running app to LEDs, the TomTom-powered Nike+ SportWatch GPS is rolling out a new white/silver colorway. The bad news? If you were waiting for other updates, like a FuelBand with GPS, SportWatch that can pump out some MP3s while you run, FuelBand app for Android or really anything other than cosmetic changes, you're out of luck. We wouldn't let that get in the way of a workout however, check below for more details on each or return to customizing some NikeiD Lebron Xs -- your choice.

Video: Jay Leno drives Lexus LFA Roadster in its motherland
Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Japan, Videos, Lexus, Celebrities, Luxury
There is only one Jay Leno and there is only one Fuji Speedway. It turns out there is also only one Lexus LFA Roadster. Put them together and you have the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage. Leno, as you may recall, recently did a tour of Japan which previously saw him at Nissan discussing the future of the Z. In this video, the comedian heads to Toyota City to watch the LFA being built and then to Oyama, Japan to drive the aforementioned fresh-air version of the V10 supercar around Fuji.
Jay says this is the only roofless LFA that's going to be built (we're not sure what that says for the maroon model they showed at auto shows in 2008 - perhaps that one wasn't a runner or it's been repainted white). In this case, you can can take the word "roofless" literally - the top isn't stowed somewhere, the LFA Roadster doesn't have one at all. That never seems to curtail the enjoyment, however, with Jay exclaiming "Oh my God!" more than once and declaring of other supercars, "None feel as refined as this."
The LFA Roadster, Jay's Serious Driving Face, glorious V10 revving and a matte black LFA built for a Buddhist monk are all in the video below.
